Massive food binge, gigantic curry puffs, and I get fed by an unknown hand... :)

So the Raya weekend came and went... it was AWESOME knowing that I had Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday off... so here's how I spent it.

I checked into a hotel in the heart of KL and pretended to be a foreigner... I left my car in the basement and NEVER took it out throughout my stay! It was AWEEESSSOOOMMMEEEE... very relaxed... very chilled... Stella and I being our kiasu selves made sure we took as much bottled soap, moisturizer and shampoo we could find... at 1 point, I had 6 bottles of these things WOOHOO! Love freebies.

Anyway, firstly I've got the highlight one of the first few homes I visited... I drove all the way to Semenyih... checked out the 'kampung' scene... complete with live stock running from one end of the kampung to the other...

Here's the spread!

Later that evening, as though the food wasn't enough... I headed for something called the 'calzone' - had no idea what it was till I ordered it - it was a MASSIVE CURRY PUFF!!

Right before the looooonnnnnnng weekend ended, I wound down... sat on my bed... and mysterious hands started feeding me...

Mmmm... that was pomelo...

Mmmm... more pomelo...

More update soon ole' chap.. :)

I make pictures SEXY!

Sure, the iPhone doesn't have the BESTEST camera in the world. Being a Nokia user, I've been pampered with mostly a 5 megapixel camera world. Then the iPhone came around, 3 megapixels, ZERO flash... I thought to myself... geez, could that be the down fall of the iPhone?

Looks like I was wrong...

One of the beauties of the iPhone is the fact that there are literally tonnes and tonnes of applications to be downloaded that will 'better' your phone. Want flash? No problemo! Download "Flash For Free"
. Works well... I mean I'd be kidding you to say that it's a Flash replacement but hey, it helps!

Then lately, I discovered this app called ColorSplash - WOW! this app is just amazing! Checkout some of the things I've been able to do to regular pics taken through the phone!

Like that's not enough... my hunt went on to download more apps from the AppStore... it's just too addictive! It was then that I found... "Pano" - check. this. out.

Let me remind you again... all the pictures here were taken through a 3.0 megapixel camera phone and altered on the phone itself... :)

A weekend at Hard Rock, Penang & I play with colours...

If you heard rumours that Fabes and I were in Penang via Twitter or Facebook... those rumours were TRUE! Yes! We were down in the land of our favourite Char Kuey Teow...

To be more accurate, we were invited to checkout a pre-opening trial run of the Hotel and Cafe. I've been to Hard Rock Hotel Bali but I must say the one in Penang is BEAUTIFUL. It literally outshines any hotel in Batu Ferringhi when it comes to the cool factor - certainly not the classiest and most luxurious but just COOL!

To not spoil the experience, I'm going to post LIMITED pictures and a video of HOW THEY ROCK!... just check them out!

We've got MJ sitting right infront of the Cafe...

It was just SOOO BEAUTIFUL that I did a little colour alteration using my latest iPhone app - the ColorSplash! Freaking AWESOME!

This place was crazy! Since they didn't have a LIVE band, while Fabes and I were spinning some songs, the Chefs and cooks came out to play!

I've even got VIDEO proof!

and finally... a SNEAK preview of the room... :)

Oh btw, have to talk about Penang and it's food man... discovered that this is THE burger store to go to... apparently it's the best and all Penangites agree - I just passed by it coz I was SOOO FILLED! I'll try it the next time... if you haven't heard or seen it... here it is!

From Blog Pictures

So there you go, my updates for day... oh yeah, Selamat Berpuasa AND we're off to a public holiday in just DAYS!!!! WOOHOO!!!

Something grows on top of Fabes, surgeons in Genting and a phone inside a shoe!?

So it's Tuesday AGAIN! Seems like there has been quite a number of public holidays in Selangor... last Monday was Merdeka... yesterday was Nuzul Al-Quran...

Anyway, here's an update of what happened over the weekend. Let's start off with Flyday... Fabes had this strange face on and all of a sudden... something started growing on his head!

From Blog Pictures

But if you look closely, it's not just golden hair... but it's got a face too - ooh! it's the Amrita pimple growing on top of Fabes!

From Blog Pictures

Don't you agree Fabes does look strangely good with looonnng female like hair? Maybe he was born a girl :P

Then it was time for lunch (still Flyday)... went out with Fabes and Amrita... I was telling them a story of my life... how bees and trees go together... how nice and brown the table was... how much it looked like amrita's hair colour, how amrita and fabes matched... and GUESS WHAT? THEY IGNORED ME and went on Twitter instead... tsk tsk tsk.. talk about COMPANY!

From Blog Pictures

Saturday came and I decided to be a little bit more adventurous - UP TO GENTING HIGHLANDS I GO! Stella and I being our kiasu-selves turned into walking surgeons...

From Blog Pictures

On the way back... the mist was horrendous!

From Blog Pictures

and it got even more worse...

From Blog Pictures

and EVEN more...

From Blog Pictures

then Sunday came and my sister showed me the latest trend, a mobile phone in a crocs!?!?

That wraps it up :) More soon! Oh yes, and do send comments, I'll try to reply to most! :P

The final showdown - Nokia N97 or the iPhone 3GS?

It's been sometime...
So it's been sometime since I've written about mobile phones. Yes, it's true... I now have an iPhone in my life, not like I haven't had one in the past but this time... it's the - 3GS.
Question is, what about my other baby? The N97? How do they compare? Is the iPhone 3GS king? Is the Nokia N97 any competition at all to the 'fruit'? I'm really tired of comparing the two phones. Once and for all, I'm going to lay out cards for both devices.

I've been using the N97 for a good period of time now. 3GS is new but the iPhone OS remains the same - of course with a few tweaks here and there in the 3.0 operating system. So here it goes, the final showdown...

Capability and Hardware
Both the N97 and the iPhone 3GS are very capable phones. Both have autofocus camera built-in, digital compass a.k.a magnetometer, touch screen, 3.5G connectivity etc.

That said however, the N97 has far more superior features
  • the 5 megapixel carl seiz lense is truly unbeatable. The contrast, the sharpness, the quality beats iPhone 3GS' 3.0 megapixel autofocus flat

  • the N97 comes with a removable battery - which has much better battery life compared to the iPhone 3GS

  • comes with a standard 32GB - on board memory

  • comes with an option to expand the onboard memory through a memory card

  • comes with a front facing camera for 3G video calls

  • comes with a physical qwerty keyboard (not exactly essential for all users)

  • Has a higher resolution 360 x 640 (nHD) resolution screen compared to the iPhone 3GS - you see more
Software
Then there's the iPhone 3GS which has none of the above features BUT excels in usability
  • On board video editing with one-touch upload to YouTube (it's a little more complicated on the Nokia)

  • Has one of the best, in my opinion Cut, Copy, Paste and Undo implementation on any mobile device

  • Device wide search a.k.a Spotlight is faster and cleaner compared to Nokia's implementation of the Device Search

  • More fluid, user friendly interface

  • Has an AppStore with over 10,000 applications - there's literally an app for everything! - more on this in my future posts

  • Built on a SOLID OS X platform - it has not hung even once since I turned on the phone
The N97 - how does it fare software wise?

  • Since revision v11 of the N97 firmware, the phone has certainly hung less. I would dare say 1 restart is required every after 1 - 2 weeks of usage. The Symbian S60V5 platform is still not the most stable - that said however, as with all Nokia products, firmwares are periodically released making the phone perform better and sometimes adds additional features to the phone's existing featureset which I'll discuss later

  • Nokia has been in the mobile phone industry way longer than Apple has and so it's no surprise that the pioneer would have the upper hand in mobile telephony software. Nokia's got a HUGE range of featureset as far as mobile phone usage is concerned for instance :
  1. Profiles - Apple doesn't have that. This is extremely useful when you like different settings for different environments, ie. much calmer tones in the office, louder when you're outside etc.

  2. Call Screening - I'd love to have this on the iPhone - when I sleep, I turn on a customized profile which alerts me only when the person calling is in my 'allowed list'

  3. Wake-on-alarm - It doesn't matter if your Nokia is completely turned off. If there's an alarm set, the phone will automatically turn on at the designated time and set-off the alarm

  4. Unlimited call and message log - Nokia allows you to set how much of your call log is recorded and how many sms messages to save - unlike Apple where there is not such setting

  5. Want to send files, photos, songs via bluetooth? No problem - can't do that with the iPhone

  6. Want to send out contact numbers via SMS? No problem - you need to send those contacts via MMS on the iPhone

  7. 3G video call? No problem

  8. Similar to the iPhone, Nokia embarked on the same boat and launched the OVI Store - similar to the AppStore however, because it's still quite young, there aren't many apps available. Those that are there are already quite promising. It's worth a look. I personally love the "Digital Compass" app.

  9. Device-wide search - Searches the entire phone plus SMS messages as well unlike the iPhone which only searches e-mails, contacts, calendar entries and music. This comes in really handy when you're looking for some information you received via sms awhile back - instead of checking one message at a time, just a quick search quickly reveals the information required
Web extensions to the phone

The iPhone 3GS
The one web extension I can think of for the iPhone is the MobileMe service. Which you can subscribe to and synchronize all your calendar and contact entries across all your Macs, iPhones and iPod Touches. The moment you add in a new entry to the calendar, phonebook, it gets uploaded to the server and backed up instantly. Never worry about losing your information ever again!

On the 3GS, with the service, you can even find your lost iPhone. Just logon to the MobileMe website and immediately you'll know where it is along with an option to set off an alarm to the person who took your phone or completely wipe all data to protect your privacy.

The only down side? It costs 329 ringgit per annum.

Nokia's answer - OVI - pronounced as 'ohvaeh'
The OVI service is available to most of the latest Nokia models in the market - including the N97. Does pretty much what MobileMe does - synchronization is not done automatically - simply sync your content to the OVI server with a single click. Once done, you may update your contact entries, put in new calendar entries, notes etc via OVI's website and the next time you sync, it gets pulled straight into your phone!

Best part? It's ABSOLUTELY FREE!

The Nokia Promise
Nokia believes in releasing a phone with a working firmware but vows to continuously improve it by adding more features, make it more efficient through firmware upgrade. Below are some of the promises set for the N97...

  • Kinetic scrolling - similar to the effects of scrolling the contact list on the iPhone but will only release that in the next firmware release- Multitouch support - similar to zooming in and out of pictures on the iPhone using 2 fingers

  • Skype for the N97 - Soon we'll be able to make calls for free via our mobile line's data connection. The iPhone has Skype as well however, voice calls are only restricted to WiFi use only
So in short which is a better phone?
It's really not fair to judge. The iPhone is a really SLEEK phone. Comes with gajillions of apps - which will take Nokia's OVI Store to catch up but only time will tell. Both phones have their advantages and disadvantages.

The said however, one thing is clear, if you are looking for the BEST MOBILE PHONE with the highest quality of components plus all the bells and whistles - the N97 is the answer. If you want the MOST ENTERTAINING and sleekest looking mobile phone - it's the iPhone 3GS.

The verdict is OUT

I really have no idea what to title this picture...

Was going through some of the pictures in my picture gallery and saw this!

From Godiva with a strange forehead

One of my dogs - named "Godiva" - why? Coz Stella my wife thinks she somewhat represents that symbol for one of the most celebrated chocolate brands in the world...

So here's Godiva checking out my digital camera a few years back. She decided to parade around with the Camera's sticker on her forehead... what shall I title this picture?

What can you get nowadays for 1 ringgit?

So I was out having breakfast... being me, a breakfast must be complete with half boiled eggs, possibly nasi lemak, toast bread and perhaps a very nice cup of ice coffee or tea or cham (coffee+tea).

Breakfast came and my toast didn't come with kaya. I asked for some kaya and the waiter said - "sir, it'll cost one ringgit... will it be okay?" - I said "sure... no problem"...

It came and here's how it looked like...

From Blog Pictures

This is ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS! 1 ringgit... for this SMALL TEENY WEENY cup of kaya! It's an outrage! To make it worse, it wasn't even filled up to the rim!

I went to the boss and went "Hallo boss, one ringgit sooooooo little ah?", she chucked and gave me a teeny weeny bit more... I gave up and scooped out every bit I could...

Well, that's what 1 ringgit can get you nowadays...

What have you gotten for a buck?

Rare scene - Fly FM Pagi Show's gender goes WONKY?

So here's a video which I recorded a while back. I was contemplating to upload it or not... but HECK... it was a torture by Fly FM Rush Hour's Prem because we lost in Fly FM's Back To School... Fabes and I (ahem) took it like a women while Nadia took it like a man...

Before you hit the play button... you might want to take a breather... it might cost a certain level of 'uncomfortableness?'...

Presenting...
Phat Fabes a.k.a Fabulous Fabes
Ben a.k.a a very lost Indian Auntie
Nadia a.k.a an Australian man who sounds like a chick...

It was TORTURE I TELL YA... TORTURE!!!...

Weekend is here! and I go CRAZY taking pics...

I've been collecting some pics using my phone lately. I must say, the N97's imaging capability is quite amazing... I point, shoot and voila... point, shoot and voila... point, shooooooot and voillllaaa... you get the idea :)

First up, cups galore!!!

oh yeah, and this... kitchen roll architecture...
Basil from Fly FM's Night Flight was bored during our team meeting... he grabbed a kitchen roll - used up all the tissue by distributing it to everyone and turned it into the most 'artistic' architecture I've ever seen... I'm telling you, deejays are also multi-talented :) We don't just talk :)

From Blog Pictures

2 full weeks of DRAMA and I turned into Darth Vader...

If you noticed that my blogs haven't been updated as often as it usually was... it's because I've been in and out of the hospital quite frequently in the past two weeks... whether it's to visit a specialist, going for x-rays or just getting hospitalized...

Week 1 was last week... bent over, felt this surging pain on my lower and and wham - went to hospital and doctor confirmed that I had a 'torn disc' AND because of this 'torn disc', one part of it was pinching on a nerve which causes this constant 'left bum-cheek' pain.

No biggy, doctor gave meds and asked me to remain on the bed for as long as I possibly can... few days down, I went back to work...

Early this week...

Monday morning, woke-up, started coughing and sneezing... and I saw BLOOD! Ignored it for a bit... went to work and it got worse. Saw our in-house doctor - I call her Fly FM's Dr. Phil - Dr. Rohaya - she checked me out and since I've been coughing for sometime now with this time being the worst, she sent me to the hospital... went to a chest / lung specialist - initially, they thought it could be pneumonia!!! Then after further tests, it was bronchitis. The weezing was really bad... so was the coughing... the blood was still a mystery.

I was admitted...

Massive 'thing' poked into me... it was torturous as they couldn't find the right vein. I was poked 5 times???!!! Yooouuccchhh!

Then it was inhaling strange things on a daily basis - cool looking or what? 'lukkkeee... I'm ur faaathhheeerrr....' (wheez)

From Blog Pictures

Through that 'thing' - I had loads of jabs... and took lots of oral medicine BUT I must say, one of the things I REALLY REALLY enjoyed during my stay was the FOOOODDDDDD...

From Blog Pictures

I'm still under medication. I think I've got 2-3 types of antibiotics... some that would dissolve, some orally... and then there's this thing I've got to inhale once in a while... I really hope this will be last 'medical' chapter in a loooooooong time. Enough of being sick man... I'm 99% recovered... still minor coughs here and there but it's all good. Just 1 more % to go. :)

Ahha! The iPhone 3GS arrives in Malaysia!

image

Well, at least by means of booking… stock according to Maxis will only be available for pickup on the 31st of July 2009; which in my opinion isn’t too long really, considering the time it took for us to get the iPhone 3G in Malaysia when the entire world was already rejoicing it’s arrival and playing with it for a good 9 months.

From what I gather at www.maxis.com.my/iphone3gs, Maxis has learned from it’s previous experience. Instead of releasing just set of pathetic iValue plans like what they did for the 3G, the 3GS comes with everything – the iData plan, the iValue plan and Prepaid plan (which essentially is no plan at all – just pay a hefty price for the phone and use it).

The prices
As with Apple’s style of pricing, everything tends to come down in price whenever a new model comes about. The iPhone 3G (16GB) model is no longer offered and has been replaced with the iPhone 3GS (16GB).

image

I got my iPhone 3G (16GB) model with the iData Plan (24 months) at a price of RM 2,100. Today, the iPhone 3GS (16GB) with the same plan goes for RM 1,990. Which isn’t too bad at all.

Will I get it?
Thing is, I’m SUPER EXCITED about the phone. Everyone online has been raving about the SPEED, the voice control features and the anti-fingerprint screen - the only bummer is this, I read a clause on the site saying that any one customer can only have a maximum of 2 contracts tied to their account – which I already have. The only logical way out of this is to buy the phone using the ‘Prepaid plan’ – which essentially means paying a hefty RM 2,490 for the 16GB and RM 2,990 for the 32GB model…

Quick update…
Just got off the phone from Maxis Customer Support and they adviced me to chill. They’ll come back to me on my options later this evening. Hope there’s good news :)

To buy or not to buy… THAT IS DA QUESTION… :)

The Birthday Torture... or so it seemed...

It's a FLYDAY! Yay! Just one day after my 27th Birthday... Woke up yesterday, felt ABSOLUTELY GREAT. Went to work and strangely... no one mentioned anything to me... apart from Fabes who uttered - "Happy Birthday"... without much of a conviction and Nadia who read an SMS wishing me so she 'casually' wished me - then it was brushed off.

6am passed, 7am passed, 8am passed, 9am passed... I announced to the world it was my birthday on radio... STILL NO REACTION from Amrita the producer or the rest of the guys...

The team meeting came and went... it was already 12pm... then it was the Fly FM Station meeting... everyone was there and I was pretty sure I prepped everyone telling them it was my birthday on the 9th... STILL NO ONE UTTERED A WORD! I was in the studio till 3pm - left for lunch ALL BY MYSELF... then I told myself... well, SCREW it... it's MY BIRTHDAY, I'll treat myself to an awesome lunch... went to 1 Utama and thought maybe Basil and Hafiz would still be around since the station meeting just went by and their shift starts at 8. Called Basil and I was invited... STILL NO MENTION... until I had to say it "ITS MY BIRTHDAY TODAY!" - they looked surprised... I was puzzled... but hey, that's where the journey began and I had my mini afternoon celebration...

Then I thought, this COULDN'T BE. The guys can't be this heartless... I'm sure they've got something up their sleeve. I called Stella to check if the guys preplanned anything and the answer was "nope" and I Went for my 1-on-1 dinner with my love later in the evening... IT WAS NOTHING LESS THAN FANTABULOUS and the CAKE!!! SUPER AWESOME!!!

After a GREAT night... I kept thinking... I'm sure there's something that was going to happen. After numerous calls to Fabes with him assuring that NOTHING was going to happen... I was imbalanced... maybe they were being mean, maybe they forgot or maybe... just maybe... something would happen...

So true enough, at 9am this morning... I REALLY NEEDED to answer nature's call - yes, it's the combo - BIG & SMALL but the guys insisted that I stayed in the studio... the mic came on and VOILA! Birthday song... birthday message from the guys and gals in the station... MASSIVE iPhone CAKE! and even a present from Fabes! WOOHHOOOOO!

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU - you guys are the best team I've worked with and of course, I musn't forget the gazillions of people who wished me happy birthday on Facebook and Twitter... you guys ROCK! and made the 'torture' less painful... :P
